Transactions and CSV import

Log what comes in and goes out, sort it into categories, find anything, and bring in history from a bank statement.

Add a transaction

  1. On the Activity tab, tap + (Add transaction).
  2. Choose Expense or Income and enter the amount.
  3. Set the Date, a Category and, if you like, an Account. Linking an account adjusts its balance automatically.
  4. Add a Note (such as Coffee with Sam) and Tags (such as travel, work) to make it easy to find later.
  5. Save.

Amounts go up to $999,999,999.99. Trinance uses US dollars.

Edit or delete

  • Tap a transaction to edit it.
  • Swipe left on it to delete, or touch and hold for Edit and Delete.
  • If the transaction was linked to an account, deleting it puts the account's balance back.

Browsing your activity

Activity lists your latest 500 transactions, grouped by day, with each day's total. The tiles at the top show Income this month and Spent this month. To find older transactions, search or filter.

A ↻ next to a transaction means it was posted automatically from a bill or income. See Bills and paychecks.

Search and filters

The search box matches a transaction's note, tags or category.

The filter button (Filter and import) narrows the list by:

  • Type: everything, expenses or income
  • Category, including Uncategorized
  • Account
  • Month

Active filters show as chips above the list; tap one to remove it, or choose Clear filters.

Categories

New profiles start with these categories:

  • Spending: Housing, Groceries, Dining, Transport, Utilities, Entertainment, Health, Other
  • Income: Salary, Side income

Manage them in More → Settings → Categories. Tap Add category and give it a name, choose whether it's used for spending or income, and pick a colour. Deleting a category keeps its transactions and bills, just without a category. Monthly limits are set on the Plan tab: see Budgets.

Import a CSV

Most banks let you download a statement as a CSV file. Trinance can read it and add the transactions in one go.

  1. Save the CSV to Files on your iPhone (or iCloud Drive).
  2. On the Activity tab, tap the filter button, then Import CSV, then Choose CSV file.
  3. Check the Columns: Date, Amount and, optionally, Description. Trinance finds the header row and guesses the columns for you.
  4. Tell it what Amount signs mean: negative is spending and positive is income (the usual), everything is spending, or everything is income.
  5. Check the Preview, then tap Import.

You'll see how many transactions were imported and how many duplicates were skipped.

What the importer understands

  • Dates like 2026-09-01, 9/1/2026, 9/1/26, 2026/9/1, Sep 1, 2026 and 1 Sep 2026.
  • Amounts with or without $ and commas. Amounts in brackets, like (12.50), count as negative. Rows with no amount are skipped.
  • Files up to 20 MB, in UTF-8 or Windows encoding.

Day-first dates (like 01/09/2026 for 1 September) are read as month first. If your bank uses them, change the date format in a spreadsheet before importing.

  • Duplicates: a row is skipped if a transaction with the same date, amount and note is already there, so importing the same file twice is safe. The preview marks them.
  • Imported transactions have no category or account, so balances don't change. Add categories yourself, or let auto-categorize suggest them.

Custom fields

Need to track something else, like a receipt number or who paid? Add a custom field for transactions in More → Settings → Custom fields. You can choose text, a number, a date, a dropdown or a checkbox. It then appears in the transaction form.
