Bank sync with Plaid

Link your banks so balances and transactions update on their own, with instant refreshes when you want the latest.

Bank sync is part of Trinance Pro and Premium. It links your bank through Plaid, a secure service that connects apps to banks. You sign in to your bank through Plaid, never through us, and your transactions are saved on your iPhone.

Before you start

  • Be signed in to your Trinance account with an active plan.
  • Your profile needs a passcode. If it doesn't have one, Trinance asks you to Set a passcode first: it keeps your bank connections safe. That passcode then locks the profile, like any other. See Passcode.
  1. On the Accounts tab, open the Bank sync card at the bottom.
  2. Tap Link a bank and confirm it's you with Face ID or your passcode.
  3. Plaid opens. Find your bank and sign in. Some banks send you to their own website or app and then back to Trinance.
  4. Choose the accounts to share and finish in Plaid.

Trinance then brings in your accounts and recent transactions and tells you how many arrived. If a bank's sign-in takes you out of Trinance, it picks up where it left off when you return, as long as that's within 30 minutes.

Automatic updates

While Trinance is open and unlocked, it syncs your banks every 5 minutes, and again whenever you open the Bank sync screen if it's been a while. Every sync updates balances and brings in new transactions. Normal syncing is unlimited.

Trinance doesn't sync in the background, so open the app to bring things up to date. The Bank sync card shows when your banks last updated.

Instant refresh

A normal sync collects whatever your bank has already sent to Plaid. Banks don't always send new transactions right away, so an instant refresh asks your bank to check right now.

  • Tap Refresh on the Bank sync card or screen, or pull down on the Accounts tab.
  • Trinance says it's checking with your bank, and anything new shows up within a minute or so.
  • You get 15 a month on Pro and 40 a month on Premium, shared across all your banks. They reset on the 1st of each month (UTC).
  • You can do one every 10 minutes. Sooner than that, Trinance says it's already up to date.
  • The Bank sync screen shows how many you have left this month.

When you've used them all, Refresh still runs a normal sync, and your banks keep updating on their own.

How accounts are created

When you link a bank, each account you shared becomes a Trinance account, named with its last four digits (for example Checking ••1234):

  • Credit cards and loans become debts.
  • Savings, CDs, money market and similar accounts become Savings.
  • Investment and brokerage accounts become Investment.
  • Other bank accounts become Checking.

Balances come straight from your bank, so you don't need to update them. You can rename these accounts. If you delete one, it won't come back on the next sync.

Imported transactions

  • The note is the merchant's name, or the bank's description.
  • Trinance picks a category when your bank's category matches one of yours by name: food and drink goes to Dining, entertainment to Entertainment, travel and transport to Transport, rent and utilities to Utilities, medical and personal care to Health, and income to Salary. Most other spending goes to Other. You can change any of them, or try auto-categorize.
  • Pending transactions arrive once they've posted.
  • Each transaction is only brought in once. If the bank later changes or removes one, Trinance updates or removes it too.

Reconnect a bank

Banks sometimes ask you to sign in again, for example after a password change. When that happens, the bank shows Needs you to sign in again and your other banks keep syncing.

  1. Open the Bank sync screen.
  2. Tap Reconnect on that bank and confirm it's you.
  3. Sign in to your bank in Plaid again.

Use Reconnect, not Link a bank, for a bank that's already in your list. Linking it again would count as a second connection to the same bank.

On the Bank sync screen, tap the … menu on the bank and choose Unlink bank. Trinance stops syncing it. Its accounts and transactions stay and become manual. If you link the same bank again later, it picks those accounts back up instead of making copies.

Bank limits

Trinance Pro links up to 2 banks and Premium up to 5. One bank login counts as one bank, however many accounts it has. When your plan is full, Link a bank is turned off: unlink a bank to add another, or move up to Premium.

Banks on your other devices

Linked banks belong to your Trinance account. A bank you link on another device or profile signed in to the same account appears here too and starts syncing, and one you unlink elsewhere is removed here.

Privacy

Your bank password goes to Plaid, never to us. When Trinance syncs, our server fetches your accounts, balances and transactions from Plaid and passes them straight to your iPhone, where they're saved. We don't keep a copy. See Privacy and security.
